May 28th was a BEAUTIFUL day for the Young Eagles Fly-in at the Red
Baron in Idaho Falls.Eight local planes
flew 45 Young Eagles during the morning flights.Pilots and planes were:
Hal Johansen - Lancair 360
Elden
Hall - Glasair
Pete Stewart - Piper Pacer
Greg Miller - RV-8
Dale Cresap - Cessna 172 XP
John Bakken - Piper Cherokee 140
Carl Yrene - Cherokee 140
Tom Strong - Piper Archer
Travis Carrigan, a newly minted 17-year old
pilot from Blackfoot flew in on a Piper Warrior that was used for ground
instruction.
None of the flights would have been possible without the help of the
ground crew.Paperwork, paperwork,
paperwork; the world runs on paperwork and the fly-in was a success because
Lisa Miller and Natalie Bergevan took charge of the
paperwork and made the flow of Young Eagles, their applications and
certificates a very smooth operation. Many thanks to both of you. Also
helping with ground operations were Terry, Christopher and Matthew Bergevan, Frank Prickett,
Bill Smith, Nolan Getsinger, Chris Bingham,
Harold Mothersill, Paul and Ophelia Trembly, Jesse Cresap, and Willis Weichel.
Frank Prickett did the honors of conducting
the ground education session before each flight.
Although Dale had coordinated with the controllers in advance, things
got a little overwhelming for ATC for a short time. All of the first group was ready to depart at
the same time.As requests were
transmitted, aircraft were cleared to taxi to runway 35.At one time I counted 5 aircraft holding on
the taxiway for 35.One controller was
handling both ground and landing and departing aircraft. He did a great job, but finally activity
apparently was about to get out of hand.A call came over the tower frequency, "All aircraft approaching
Idaho Fall Airport remain clear of the Class D airspace."I've never heard that one before. After sequencing in a commercial airliner and
a Citation he began to take other requests and in short order planes were
landing and departing again.Shortly
thereafter there was a different voice handling ground. The cavalry had arrived and operations ran
smoothly from then on.Many thanks to
the controllers for a job well done.
Gary Shipley proudly announced the following Monday that not one Young
Eagle got sick. This speaks well for the
professionalism of the pilots (of course the fact that the air was smooth as
glass couldn't have had anything to do with it!)
Our next meeting is June 18th.This will be a poker run up and down the valley, finishing at
Blackfoot.Check the website for
details.Hope to see you all there.

Stewart, Secretary
The date was selected to accommodate Jared Aicher
of Boise as the first stop in his nationwide Young Eagle tour, but the turnout
by both pilots and kids was good in spite of the holiday weekend. I spent about
as much Hobbs time on the ground as in the air, with taxi and takeoff delays.
On my first approach, tower changed my approach instructions twice.
Gary got many admiring comments for his hat. He said that we
had never had an air sick kid, and that we were about due, but our record
holds. I have received positive feedback from parents of the kids. I am passing
along these notes of thanks.
Dale,
My kids wanted to write you a thank you note.I told them I would send their thoughts in an
email to you. Thanks for organizing this
and for making my kids day.
Greg
I want to say how much fun it was to fly in a little
plane. We're mostly used to big planes
and it was fun to do something different. It was also really fun to have the opportunity to actually fly the
plane.That's something not many kids
can say they've done and it was an awesome experience.I hope that you will keep going with that
event because it was really neat to give kids who might never get to fly a
chance to try it.
Thanks Again!
Holly Preslar
I want to thank you for giving us a chance to fly in an
airplane.I really liked being able to
look around from above.I also thought
it was neat to get to hear what the tower was saying. What is niner niner??I like the
feeling I get when the airplane is turning.
Thank you.
Jacob Preslar
This is my first time organizing a rally. I owe more to
divine providence than to my own ability for the success of this event.
Young Eagles gives us a chance to fly, to generate interest
in aviation and good will in the community, to be a hero to some kids. We have
never had a rally in Rexburg. I am willing to organize one there later in the
season if there is enough interest and support from chapter members.
