NEXT MEETING:    ::::THE KITTY HAWK REPORT::::

Saturday, February 21, 10:00 a.m. @ AeroMark in Idaho Falls.  Hear first hand from those who were there for the 100th anniversary of the first powered flight.  Members Jerry Phillips & Paul Tremblay (along with wives MaryEllen & Ofilia, respectively) were at Kitty Hawk for the celebration of this historic event.  Do not miss this once in a lifetime narrative and photo presentation of their experience.

Publicity is  Working:   At the last meeting we had several “new” aviation enthusiasts in attendance.  By a show of hands we learned that many were there because they heard of it via the media.  Carl Yrene, our new volunteer  Publicity Chairman, prepared the notices and worked directly with the media to generate the publicity for the Chapter meeting.   It is the first time in many years, at least to my knowledge, that this type of publicity program has been in place.  Carl is planning to expand the coverage to be more inclusive with television, radio & press coverage.  So!!! it’s working and we intend to do a “survey” at future meetings to continuously assess the benefits of these public service announcements in promoting our chapter.  Kudos to Carl!!!

From the Prez:

Welcome New Members::

Jim Wolper/Terri Ross:  Jim is a Professor of Mathematics at ISU with a Ph.D from Brown University.  He is an experienced and active aviator with some 4000  hours of flying time and ratings including  CFII & ATP.  He instructs and does charter flights for the AVCENTER in, I’m guessing, his spare time.  Oh yes, he also  owns and flies his Taylorcraft BC12D and is working on becoming a DAR.

As if that is not enough, he is also the father of 6 year old twins which in addition to the above activities must give him plenty of time in the LazyBoy  recliner. HA!

Welcome to Chapter 407 Jim & Terri !!!!

Roger/Dana Johnston:   Roger is a retired Montana school system administrator with a Ph.D from Montana State University.  After moving here from Montana he learned to fly at the AVCENTER and earned his Private License last Summer.  In addition to flying his Cessna 175, with vortex generators, flap gap seals and upgraded avionics, he an avid upland game bird hunter and fly fisherman.  He is surveying the many custom built airplane options and eyeing something perhaps in the GlaStar category as a future project.  I advised him he came to the right  place as Chapter 407 has lots of friendly expertise.

Welcome to Chapter 407 Roger & Dana!!!!

            Paul Tremblay/Tech. Counselor

Dan Pierce/Tech. Counselor & Flight Advisor

            Hal Johansen/Flight Advisor

Austin Moses/Web Page & Newsletter Editor

Austin Moses reported that progress is being made on the web site (eaa407.org) and encouraged all to send pictures of their planes to him to include on the web site.  Austin also provided an audit report on the finances of the chapter, and reported all is in order.

Hal reported that there would be Young Eagle flights again this year.

Carl Yrene is the publicity chairman, and reported that announcements of this meeting appeared in the local newspapers.

Don Knauts provided a report on the library, and has a list of resources that he will have posted on the web site.

Jerry Phillips asked everyone to come up with ideas for activities for the coming year.  Someone suggested that a fly-in to Jackpot would be fun...plans will be made for later in the year.  Jerry then received a list of volunteers for refreshments for this year:

            February-Don Knauts, March-Carl Yrene, April-Pete Stewart, May-Bill Smith, June-Oscar Batdorf, July-Paul Tremblay, August-Hal Johansen (breakfast at Dell, MT), September-Austin Moses, October-Mac Asher, November-Brad Fell, December-all members-pot luck(Christmas party).

Hal reported on the planning meeting for 2004. Dates and activities will be posted on the web site. Harold Turvey reported on the possibility of a bus to the Salt Lake Center, for a cost of $814.  A motion was made with a second to provide $500 to I. S. U. Aviation School for scholarships.  It may be made into an annual donation, to be determined at a later date.

Dan Pierce provided a presentation of Flight Advisors (F. A.) and Technical Counselors (T. C.). Dan reported that the accident rate is very high for the first five flight of a home built aircraft. The F. A. program was developed to reduce this high accident statistic. Dan said the F. A. is there to help builders make better decisions about airworthiness of their new airplanes and their piloting capabilities of the new airplane. Dan reported that no dual instruction is allowed for the first 25 hours with a certified engine and the first 40 hours with a non-certified engine. He advised builders to get flight instruction through factory authorized instructor pilots in the type of airplane they are building.

The T. C. is to provide expertise and another set of eyes to prevent problems, identify problems and help correct problems for the builders. It is recommended that between 3 and 4 inspections are accomplished for new airplanes. The T. C. can also help with modifications. Dan said that builders that make full use of the F. A. and T. C. may be eligible for insurance during the first 10 hours of flight.

The next meeting will be held February 21st, and Paul Tremblay and Jerry Phillips will present pictures and discuss the 100 Year Centennial of Aviation held at Kitty Hawk, N. C. in December, 2003.
