President's Message:

Next Meeting:  Our next meeting will be in Pocatello on August 19, 2006 at 6:00 pm.  Author, Jim Wolper will visit with us about navigation systems and how they have evolved as well as other subjects of his choosing.  Frank Prickett has been our contact with Jim and we appreciate his efforts to arrange this informative program.  Thanks Frank!

Last Meeting:  Our thanks go to Jerry Phillips for arranging for the Lancair people on their visit in the ES.  It was an informative meeting even though they wouldn't divulge what is in the works in the R&D department at Lancair.  Look for Pete's more complete report on the meeting.

EAA CHAPTER 407 Minutes, July 22, 2006

Our July meeting was held at Aero Mark in Idaho Falls , 14 members were present.  Jerry Phillips' son, Ben, is an engineer at Lancair and arranged for him to fly to Idaho Falls so we could see what a beautiful fast airplane looks like.  Ben arrived about 7:00 in one of the first 300's made with his wife Ziha, instructor Josh Moore and another Lancair employee.  A question and answer session followed.  Ben talked about construction techniques and the difference between carbon and glass construction. He had with him a wooden model, the type of which the company uses to make the molds for some of the parts.

Lancair has a builder’s assistance program that is tailored to the builders needs.  Cost is $4000 a week, which sounds like a lot, but in 10 weeks you can fly your almost complete plane home.  Ben's point was that some people want the experience of building and some just want a plane to fly; the builder's program helps the latter. Because of limited time Ben had to be back by sundown so left by 8:00.  He left a video that describes Lancair construction.

The next meeting will be in Pocatello , Saturday, August 19th at 6:00 PM.  A presentation will be made by Jim Wolper on various aspects on navigation.  Jim has recently published a book on the subject.  See you all there.

Young Eagles

A Young Eagle rally was held at Idaho Falls airport on July 15. Thanks to Steve Hildreth, Austin Moses, and Kenny Smith for flying kids, and to Harold Mothersill, Reed White, and Pete Stewart for running things on the ground. There were 32 kids, which we were able to handle easily, and I took 3 moms for a flight afterward. The tower gave us runway 35 for the rally, and we flew a common course over Ammon Wal-Mart. Both of these helped with the flow of traffic, on the ground and in the air. Kudos to Pete for keeping things straight on the ground, particularly since we had two different kids named Spencer Harrison Nichols. At first I thought this was an extra copy of a form for the same kid, but the birthdays and father’s signatures were different. What are the odds of that? A father would not give two sons the same name, but brothers might. I wonder if they were cousins?  Many of the kids are scouts, and Pete gives them a lecture for their merit badge after the rally.

Reed White has proposed that we do another Young Eagle rally in Lava Hot Springs on October 20. He is handling the publicity in the area and Lava is within reasonable distance for a rally. Mark your calendars.
